Northern Ireland centenary: Fermanagh politicians look to the future

THE Centenary celebrations of the formation of Northern Ireland and the Partition of Ireland was one of the many casualties of the Coronavirus pandemic. Without the ongoing pandemic, Monday would doubtless have been marked with great fanfare from Unionist groups across civic society – instead, celebrations and commemorations have been delayed until later in the year. Locally, Centenary day plans were pared right back, with Enniskillen Castle being illuminated in purple, in non-partisan, corporate Council colours on May 3 to mark 100 years since The Government of Ireland Act 1920 came into effect, marking a respectful if muted acknowledgement of the milestone. Nationalist groups have been clear they would not be celebrating Partition, but perhaps people on all sides of political divides in Northern Ireland will have used the anniversary to take stock of the current situation, reflect on what the North has experienced in the past 100 years, and to use this time to look to the

Disgust at large-scale fly-tipping at rural Lack road – including animal remains

A LOCAL woman has experssed her outrage and disgust after discovering dead animal remains among large piles of household goods and general waste dumped along a rural road in the Lack area of Co. Fermanagh. Jane Scanlon was out walking with her family around the Largy area of Lack last Sunday morning, February 21, when they came across large piles of rubbish dumped along the Kiln Road, near the quarry. Upon closer inspection, they made a disturbing discovery. There was a dead calf, Jane told this newspaper. The calf looks like it s not there that long. From what we could see, it s not that badly decomposed, in that you could still make it out and then there s a skeleton there too.

Northern Ireland council wants DUP s Foster to act over Gregory Campbell s Songs of Praise comments

The decision was taken at a meeting of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council. Only the DUP themselves voted against, with one declaring the debate a: “DUP bashing session”, before throwing down the gauntlet demanding Sinn Fein apologise for attending Bobby Storey’s funeral. Members were discussing a Good Relations Audit report which highlighted the overarching aspect of “Everybody belongs”, when Sinn Fein councillor Anthony Feely said the community was “shocked and angered” by Mr Campbell’s remarks, and proposed writing to the DUP leader. Seconding, Independent councillor Emmet McAleer said: “The comments were actually quite disgusting. The MP in question has refused to apologise. It’s outrageous he is trying to stand by explicitly racist comments. It’s vitally important a unified message is sent out from this council.”
