Out of 5,986 ballots cast, Gunter took the lion-share with 4,434 votes (74%). I want to thank the citizens of San Angelo for getting out and voting, Gunter said from her election watch party at Miss Hattie s Restaurant. I am so proud to have the opportunity to lead the city and work hard for the citizens. On Saturday, May 1, 2021, Gunter defeated two other challengers: Dietrick Tillis and Silvara Lawson. Lawson would have been the second female to hold the office. Tillis was the city s first Black mayoral candidate, according to a spokesperson with San Angelo s local chapter of the NAACP. Tillis finished in second place with 1,224 votes (20.5%). Lawson came in a distant third with 328 votes (5.5%). She could not reached for comment on Saturday. The results are not considered final until canvassed. ....
On Election Day, May 1, 2021, voters went to the polls to decide three district races. Single Member District 1 Out of a total of 588 ballots cast, incumbent Bill Dendle was projected to be the winner with 411 votes (70%) to Chris Giroux s 177 ballots (30%). The Standard-Times contacted Bill Dendle for his thoughts on being reelected to the school board. Well, I d like to say Hello to Mr. Giroux. It was a very amiable campaign, and I wish him well in his future endeavors, Dendle said. I look forward to just getting to work again and helping the kids of San Angelo with their education. The corridors were empty of all but election staff at about 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 27, 2021, a stark contrast to the long lines of registered voters who cast ballots during early voting for the November 2020 U.S. presidential election.
