Rare Meteorite From Spectacular Fireball Turns Out To Be First Of Its Kind To Fall In UK


On February 28, 2021, a bright fireball lit the sky over the British Isles. The original space rock was flying through the air at a whopping 14 kilometers (9 miles) per second before hitting the Earth’s atmosphere.
Thanks to specialized cameras across the UK, researchers were able to follow the trajectory of the meteor from its original orbit in space all the way to the likely location it hit – and that’s where they found the meteorite. The space rock landed at 9:54 pm local time on Sunday, February 28 in the town of Winchcombe in the west of England. It is now in the care of the Natural History Museum in London. ....

First meteorite found in UK for 30 years - and extremely rare example - could hold secrets of solar system

When a family fast asleep in the Cotswolds were woken by an almighty thud, they could never have known that the object causing it may be the key to finding out how life formed on Earth.
The 300g rock on their driveway which made the noise, was the first meteorite to be found in the UK for 30 years. It landed after zooming through the air as a fireball.
Surveying the strange object outside their home they guessed it was rather special, and summoned scientists from the Natural History Museum to investigate. ....

The small meteor that came crashing towards our planet in late February is an extremely rare type known as a carbonaceous chondrite - a rock that contains the ingredients for life. It is the first of its kind to ever be found in the UK after it landed in a driveway in the Cotswold town of Winchcombe.
