Principal uses personal experience to connect with students

COSHOCTON – Sometimes what seems like a longshot can be life’s destiny in the making. So it was for Eddie Dovenbarger. “As a kid growing up,” he explained, “I always thought we were on the wrong side of town. I was one of eight kids, only four graduating from high school. I was the only one to go to college. I guess we were poor, but really didn’t know it. I roamed the streets and went from church youth group to church youth group just trying to fit in. “I was always a good student,” he added, “and gravitated to the teachers in elementary school for guidance and acceptance. Early on, I went to the bowling alley with my dad and would help grade papers with teachers down there watching their spouse’s bowl.

Coshoton County Career Center gets real-world money management lesson

About 60 students participated in the program this past week at the Coshocton County Career Center. One component is a simulation with community members walking students through a real world situation. Instructor was Emily Adams of the Ohio State University Extension Office of Coshocton County. COSHOCTON - About 60 students at the Coshoton County Career Center recently got a taste as to how finances work in the real world.  Real Money/Real World Youth Financial Literacy Program was offered through the Ohio State University Extension Office of Coshocton County and taught by Emily Adams, family and consumer sciences educator. Students learned about opening bank accounts, paying bills, writing checks, balancing checkbooks and making smart choices as consumers. The course will be offered this week at Coshocton High School.

Murdered Coshocton woman remembered as a light to all Several hundred attended candlelight vigil in memory of Brianna Ratliff Brianna Ratliff went missing April 15 and her dead body was found April 18 in a vacant house. Blake Grewell, a friend, has been charged with murder in the case and bail set at $1 million. A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday at Hall Park to honor Brianna with several hundred people attending. Brianna s mother said her daughter was a light in the world and had nothing but love for everyone. COSHOCTON - Laurelanne Ratliff knows that her daughter Brianna was a good person who touched a lot of people and was kind to everyone. This was evident by several hundred people who attended a candlelight vigil Tuesday evening at Hall Park in memory of the murdered 20-year-old.

They say Blake Grewell was a former friend of the Brianna Ratliff. After being missing for several days, Ratliff’s body was found by a search team at a vacant home on Chestnut Street in Coshocton earlier this week.

Local News Briefs: Fair Board planning for full fair Staff Report Fair Board planning for full fair COSHOCOTN - The Coshocton County Fair Board via social media has announced plans to have a full fair this year. The 170th annual fair is planned for Oct. 1 to 7.  It is also planning other events for May to July with details to be released in the future based on guidelines for such events coming from the state. The board is taking donations for the annual Independence Day fireworks. Gov. Mike DeWine said this week he anticipated having full county fairs this year with some adjustments. He also said it s possible that health orders might be off by the time of the first fairs in the state in early June. In 2020, the Coshocton County Fair was a junior fair only with a limited number of people on the grounds.
