Corporate Korea should learn hard lesson from fiasco
LG Electronics has decided to pull out of the mobile phone business after recording losses for 23 consecutive quarters. Twenty-six years after LG set foot in the mobile handset industry, the company is withdrawing under the weight of nearly 5 trillion won ($4.4 billion) in accumulated losses. The smartphone sector has enormous strategic value as the hub of a hyper-connected society. All information and communication technology (ICT) devices, increasingly including home appliances and vehicles, are organically linked to and interact with one another through the hub.
The huge potential makes it all the more painful for LG to give up the business. The fiasco shows that just a single critical mistake could drive even a giant player like LG into an irrecoverable setback in this global business war.
