An Athens man has died of the gunshot wound he suffered during an altercation with a neighbor.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon says 42-year-old Corey Markey died Thursday morning at Memorial Medical Center, one week after authorities say he was shot as part of an ongoing dispute.
69-year-old Randy Wasilewski was taken into custody shortly after that incident in the 300 block of South Adams Street in Athens. He was initially booked on attempted murder charges and held on $2 million bond, but prosecutors say they will now seek charges of first-degree murder in the case.
Markey remains in serious condition at Memorial Medical Center.
Wasilewski also was charged with one count of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm.
Bond for Wasilewski was set at $2 million on Friday.
Athens police initially responded to call in the 300 block of South Adams Street shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday.
Steve Courtney, the Menard County public defender, was appointed to represent Wasilewski.
Wasilewski s preliminary hearing is set for June 15.
Taylorville man in court
Murder charges were also read against Richard J. Klekamp, Jr., 19, of Taylorville Tuesday in Christian County court in Taylorville.
