An underwhelming turnout Thursday, April 29, marked the Park Township Board of Trustees first resident Q&A forum, part of a larger effort of a newly-elected board to build trust with the township s residents. I was, quite frankly, disappointed that more residents didn t show up, said Park Township Supervisor Jim Gerard. I was hoping that more people would come and ask questions of the board. The more people who talk to us and ask questions, the more we understand what people are thinking. Due to continued state health department limits on the size of indoor gatherings, capacity inside the township board room was limited, but residents could also attend using the videoconferencing platform Zoom. ....

Park Township budget deliberations began Thursday when trustees reviewed the proposed 2021-22 budget, which includes funds for several parks projects and a consultant to gather public input for the former airport site. Trustees will host a public hearing and vote on the budget in March. The next fiscal year for the township begins April 1. The budget calls for holding the township s general operating tax rate flat at .9076 mills. The combined tax rate levied by the township will decrease due to planned reductions to the dedicated millage for police and fire. Several years ago, the township renegotiated agreements with the Ottawa County Sheriff s Office, resulting in lower costs. As a result, the township is lowering its Police/E-Unit millage below what s needed to fund operations and dipping into its fund balance of more than $1.3 million, in order to reduce the fund balance to be more in line with current costs and cashflow needs. ....
