The Centre has told the Delhi High Court that the national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' and the national song 'Vande Mataram' "stand on the same level" and citizens should show equal respect to both.
Emphasising that both national song and national anthem have their own sanctity and deserve equal respect, Centre stated that the subject matter of the present proceedings can never be a subject matter of a writ petition

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought the Centre s stand on a plea seeking directions for Vande Mataram , a poem which had played a historic role in the struggle for India s freedom, to be "honoured equally" with Jana Gana Mana .
The Delhi High Court sought to know the Centre and Delhi government's stand policy be framed to equally propagate the national anthem and the national song.
