Carlos Cortez named chancellor of San Diego Community College District

A workforce-education expert has been named chancellor of the San Diego Community College District, which is experiencing the sort of big enrollment drops that have been plaguing many of the state’s public, two-year colleges.
Carlos O. Cortez will move into the new post on July 1, succeeding Constance M. Carroll, who is retiring after serving in that post for almost 20 years.

Cortez, 46, is currently president of the San Diego College of Continuing Education, a job he has held since 2015.
He will oversee a district that is composed of three for-credit schools San Diego City College, Mesa College and Miramar College as well as the continuing education college. ....

Free College Promise Approved |

As higher education expenses keep climbing across the nation, 200 local community college students will soon catch a break from the high fees.
The San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) Board of Trustees approved a pilot
program that will aid 200 deserving students starting college in the fall 2016 semester by waiving these students’ course fees for the duration of the 2016-2017 school year.
The plan which was approved last Thursday, will initially aid 175 students in the San Diego Unified School District and an additional 25 students in SDCCD’s continuing education programs.
In his 2015 state of the Union Address, President Barack Obama unveiled the America’s College Promise program, aimed at making the first two years of higher education free for what was described as “responsible students.” The program at SDCCD is based on this model which is now in place at over 100 community colleges across America with more being current ....

The San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) annually generates $4.1 billion in economic activity, according to the latest report from a labor market analytics firm that lauds the SDCCD for playing a pivotal role in reducing economic inequities.
According to Idaho-based Emsi, the $4.1 billion generated by the SDCCD is enough to support nearly 42,000 jobs, or 1 out of every 52 jobs in the region. ....
