Mary Duret - Brainerd Dispatch | News, weather, sports from Brainerd and Baxter

Mary Rose Duret, age 90, of Pequot Lakes, passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Lakewood Health in Staples. She was born to Lynn and Rose Vinton on September 12, 1932, in St. Cloud. She married Lorin “Skee” Duret on October 19, 1948. Mary’s mother owned and operated Rose’s Inn in St. Cloud where Mary worked for many years. She also worked at St. Cloud College as a cook and in food service with her cousin, Rick. Mary’s parents had a cabin on Sylvan Lake near Pillager where the family spent a lot of time. Upon Skee’s retirement, he and Mary bought a nice home on Sylvan Lake near the family cabin. Mary has lived by her daughter, Connie, in Pequot Lakes for the past 16 years. She loved watching the wildlife outside her window, feeding the birds and her cats, Felix, Cleo and Gizmo.

Child sex predator sentenced to life without parole over the murders of two boys in the 1980s

A convicted child rapist who killed two six-year-old boys in Southern California in the 1980s was sentenced on Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Kenneth Rasmuson, 59, showed no emotion as he was sentenced in Los Angeles County Superior Court in Pomona over the abduction and killing of Jeffrey Vargo and Miguel Antero in the 1980s. He had pleaded no-contest in February. Rasmuson murdered 6-year-old Jeffrey Vargo, who disappeared on July 2, 1981, after he left his house in Anaheim Hills in Orange County to look at a fireworks stand. Rasmuson (pictured in court in February) has previously spent 17 years in prison for the separate abuse of an 11-year-old boy in Santa Barbara County and a three-year-old boy in Los Angeles

(Shutterstock) LOS ALAMITOS, CA The parents of Orange County murder victims joined prosecutors and crime victims Monday calling for criminal justice reform during a rally for victims of violent crime. The crowd gathered at the annual victim s rights rally sponsored by the Orange County District Attorney s Office. Steve Herr, the father of Sam Herr, whose killer,Daniel Wozniak, was sentenced to death, said he felt relief after jurors reached verdicts 6 1/2 years after his son s murder. That relief was shortlived after Gov. Gavin Newsom halted the death penalty in California.
