A Shannon tourism masterplan to invest more than €70 million in visitor facilities in the Shannon river region by 2030, was launched recently.
The masterplan is to play a major part in the Ireland s Hidden Heartlands campaign, which aims to attract 500,000 tourists a year to the region by 2030.
The Shannon forms the spine of Ireland s Hidden Heartlands and embraces the heart of the country from Leitrim soutwards to Lough Derg, extending through Roscommon, West Cavan, Longford, East Galway, East Clare and parts of Westmeath, Offaly and Tipperary.
The masterplan was commissioned by Waterways Ireland in partnership with Failte Ireland and is supported by ten local authorities, which border the Shannon from Cavan to Limerick and was launched by Minister for Tourism, Catherine Martin and Minister for Local Government, Darragh O Brien online with John Mc Donagh, CEO of Wat ....

HOLY Island and the Ardnacrusha hydro-electric power station have been identified as catalysts for development across the East and South East Clare regions in a new masterplan developed for the promotion of tourism along the River Shannon.
The Shannon Tourism Masterplan was launched on Tuesday, after being commissioned by Waterways Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, and supported by Clare County Council along with nine other local authorities. The document proposes an investment of over €76 million in visitor facilities, along the river, up to 2030.
Clare features in a Lower Shannon Discovery Zone which runs from Portumna to Limerick. Among the ‘hero products’ of this zone is Inis Cealtra. According to the masterplan, the monastic island will “form a core element of the emerging Pilgrim Way, offering clusters of early Medieval monastic sites of exceptional interest… at Limerick, Killa ....

€76.5m Shannon tourism plan invites visitors to slow down at 'tranquility zones'


The mighty Shannon will become Ireland’s surprising heart.”
That s according to a €76.5m masterplan mapping out the future of tourism along Ireland s longest river to 2030 – the first such plan dedicated to the entire Shannon Region.
Stretching from the storied Shannon Pot in Co Cavan to the river’s estuary in Limerick, and including the Shannon-Erne Waterway, the Shannon Masterplan envisages a future where slow travel” can attract more visitors and increase dwell-time in Ireland’s hidden heartlands.
Among the ideas for “world-class visitor experiences are harbour and amenity upgrades, the creation of new blueways and trails – linking Boyle to Lough Key in Co Roscommon, for example – and the possible “reimagining of historic buildings like lockkeepers cottages and riverside warehouses into boutique hotels, cafes, galleries or museums”. ....
