political rhetoric hate and i would consider, we ll let the witnesses describe it, this could be the first political rhetorical terrorist act and that has to stop. you are actually standing here in your baseball cleats and you are in your uniform. and this is a game that is supposed to be for fun and it s supposed to be for charity and it s a chance for republicans and democrats to have good competition and tell me about that and what it s like to go to practices and what it s like to go to the game and now with this having happened, how that makes you feel on what was supposed to be a wholesome event. we have raised over $600,000 for local d.c. charities and they come together to play a game. we have kids in the degreeouts and staffers and former staffers that practice with us. these aren t just members of congress and you would think
a it can be a very secure facility, right? but at the same time this is supposed to happen tomorrow. obviously, the team is very shaken up. we re going to see if maybe it s going to be rescheduled for a later date in talking to some of these members of congress and they re going to feel a need to still have the game, but it just seems, wolf, it just seems difficult to have it tomorrow, obviously, and we re still waiting for official word on that. this is an annual, vent and very popular, this baseball game between democratic lawmakers and this is the men s baseball game. breanna, you ve participated for years in the women s congressional media baseball game. talk about that for a second. these two games together are sort of rites of summer, as i have said. i ve played for several years. i ve been a captain on the team. i wasn t going to play because i injured my foot, but i was going
when you turn on the 24-hour news cycle that no republican ever talks to a democrat. that s just not true. i catch in the game and you can ask every democrat. i jog with them. we have fun and it is a great opportunity and i never thought i would play a baseball game for charity, go to practice at 6:30 in the morning and have to dodge bullets. how does this change the game and how does this change just how members of congress are concerned about their security? well, it has to change. this has to be the breaking point. is this america s breaking point when it comes to the political rhetoric that s become so hateful. it s my breaking point and that s why i m here talking to you today. we have to end this and i ve got to stop it because i watched my friend and my fellow member steve scalise lay motionless on the field wondering if he was going to be okay. that is a picture i will never forget. he is in surgery. i m sure that you know that and you have an update. he was able to talk
to warm the bench. obviously, there aren t as many women in congress and there is a bipartisan team of women and they play journalists unlike the democrats versus the democrats. the men s game tomorrow night and the women s game next week and this is just part of the thing that says it is summer in washington, d.c., because even though you have these teams with dozens of players there are so many people who come out. we have seen supreme court justices coming to these games, not just members of congress and senators, but officials and throughout all of washington who flock to these games which are charity events and it also provides a bipartisan spirit, i think, for a number of congresses of congress. we are going to try to get rodney davis to talk to us. hold on, there is a news conference, alexandria police are about to update us, capitol
university hospital here in washington, d.c., they are both, we are told, in surgery. have you been told anything at all about a possible motive from this shooter, congressman? nothing at all. and as i say, it came as a complete surprise and both teams do and we practice and it s one of the nicest things we do and the game was set for tomorrow and i don t know if it was going to be canceled or not and it s an annual game and it s gone over 100 years and it s very fraternal and this was a route 18 day which turned into a nightmare because of this shooter and i don t know a motive and again, at first, when i first heard the first pop ring out i thought it was a gun. i didn t know it was a gun, but within a matter of 30 seconds it was a barrage of bullets flying everywhere and many of my colleagues, i talkeded with one, trent kelly who was running in
