Parties play polarisation game to win some, lose some | India News

Mamata Banerjee clearly mobilised the Muslim vote in her favour, elbowing out the Congress-Left-Furfura Sharif alliance
NEW DELHI: The thread of polarisation runs through the results of Assam, West Bengal and Kerala, playing out in different ways with the beneficiaries changing in political scenarios where community and ethnic faultlines operate in different ways.
BJP’s push for a Hindu consolidation was the key factor in its West Bengal strategy, an effort that ran parallel with a bid to attract specific caste groups to its fold. The anticipated subaltern revolt failed to materialise while Mamata Banerjee clearly mobilised the Muslim vote in her favour, elbowing out the Congress-Left-Furfura Sharif alliance, the rival contender for the ‘secular’ vote, out of the arena. ....

GUWAHATI: If the 2016 election revolved around Narendra Modi and his vow to free the state of infiltrators, the 2021 election was all about the identity of Assamese and indigenous people. Development and employment were lesser issues.
Assam, except the Bengali-inhabited Barak Valley, erupted in protests in December 2019 when the Centre passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Five people were killed in the protests and numerous others were injured in the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protests that sparked a chain reaction across the Brahmaputra Valley.
Leading organizations like the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu), Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and Asam Sahitya Sabha expressed solidarity with the protesters to safeguard the indigenous identity for months till the pandemic brought protests to a grinding halt in March next year. The identity of the Assamese and other indigenous people took centrestage whe ....

In Assamese heartland, those who fought BJP’s citizenship law are now voting for ‘development’
Economics, and not identity, dominates election conversations.
Voters in Upper Assam say development is central to the election, not citizenship battles.

Fifteen months ago, within 24 hours of Parliament passing the Citizenship Amendment Act, five young men fell to police bullets in Guwahati as scorching protests swept through Assam.
The controversial amendments fast-track Indian citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In Assam, which shares a long border with Bangladesh, angry protestors declared the new law would spell the death knell for the Assamese identity. For years, the Congress had sheltered “illegal” Muslim migrants, they claimed, and now the Bharatiya Janata Party, which had promised to chase away all “infiltrators”, was doing the same by paving the way ....

Assam elections 2021: Shah takes a dig at Congress on infiltration

Assam elections 2021: Shah takes a dig at Congress on infiltration
India
Published: Monday, January 25, 2021, 12:04 [IST]
Guwahati, Jan 25: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday alleged that if the Congress-AIUDF combine come to power in Assam they will open all gates to welcome infiltrators. Addressing a public rally here, Shah said the Congress rule in the state gave only bloodshed, in which thousands of youths lost their lives. Can Congress and Badrudding Ajmal keep Assam free from infiltration? If they come to power, they will open all gates to welcome them, because it is their vote bank, he said.
Only the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi can protect the state from infiltration from the neighbouring country, Shah said in his first election rally in poll-bound Assam. The Congress has formed Grand Alliance with AIUDF, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) and Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM) to fight the upcoming Assembly election, likely to be held in March-Apr ....
