'A star among stars': Tampa Bay Newspapers publisher Dan Autrey retires


SEMINOLE — In simple terms, Tampa Bay Newspapers publisher Dan Autrey explained the reason for his success while at the helm of community papers for many years.
Hire good people. And let them do the job you hire them for, said Autrey, who is retiring at the end of July. That s all it takes.
Recruited in 2002 to restructure and rebuild Tampa Bay Newspapers, Autrey began to look at opportunities to create more publications.
After some newspaper redesign efforts, personnel moves and other improvements, Autrey oversaw expansion efforts, leading to the start of more newspapers, such as the Dunedin and Palm Harbor Beacons, along with new special sections. ....

See them there, then loaded the stacks into the backs of their cars and headed out on their assigned routes. readers were grateful. i ve been hearing from them all morning. one family even put out this thank you sign right there on the front lawn. it s a really interesting story because it shows, like barry diller was saying, there s still an appetite for printed newspapers. second, if it s not reliable, people will get frustrated. the phone server at the boston globe crashed earlier this week from all the customer complaints. that s when reporters started to rise up and say to the ceo, we re willing to come in and help deliver the paper. this sometimes does happen in smaller markets, with community papers, sometimes weekly papers. my college paper, i used to deliver it to campus. but to see the staff of the boston globe come together to do this is remarkable. they re probably asleep right now. hopefully this delivery problem will work itself out very soon. ....

That s something we are really considering, how we can get usa today to be the broader national global paper and still let our local papers command the loyalty that they have in their communities. right. there were a number of layoffs at the gannett local papers, places like the indianapolis star and the des moines register and the arizona republic. does your working with them somehow offset that in a way? i don t know. that s another division of the company where they had their economic reasons, but clearly we are trying to work more with the community papers so that we can deliver them the national news and they can focus on what they do best, which is the local news. if we can get to that spot where we can have many local areas of loyalty, 104 at last count, plus have the national/global product that usa today is, that we can do something that s not really being done on any different ....
