Voluntary Conservation Thriving In Lower Hutt

The Environment Court has recently closed the application
of Forest & Bird Society that sought to reintroduce Hutt
City Council’s withdrawn proposal for Plan Change 46. The
proposed plan change was to apply restrictive “Significant
Natural Area” restrictions on over 1200 private properties
in Lower Hutt under s.6C of the Resource Management Act
1991. The failure of the Forest and Bird application
confirms and reinforces the Council’s 2018 eventual
decision to work collaboratively with private property
owners and support their efforts to protect and enhance
indigenous biodiversity after an extended period of dispute
with local landowners.

Canal Rd Native Tree Protectors To Appear In Court Monday

10 tree protectors suffering bruises, broken bones and
carrying branches from the trees they tried to save will
appear in the Auckland District Court at 9am tomorrow
(Monday 15 March).
The 10 were arrested last Tuesday
while attempting to stop the felling by developer Paul Macey
of the remaining native trees at a Canal Road property in
Avondale.
The 245 day community occupation of the
property at 52-58 Canal Road came to a “heartbreaking”
end on Tuesday when over 70 police and a score of security
guards blocked the community from entering the site while
Macey directed contractors to chainsaw the remaining native ....

New Health Scholarship For Whānau Ora

Te Arawa Whānau Ora has announced its new scholarship in
memory of former CEO and stalwart, Mala Grant, who passed
away last year.
The Ngaroma (Mala) Grant Memorial
Scholarship aims to support a Māori undergraduate student
studying in health or social services, with the aspiration
of supporting whānau to thrive in Te Arawa.

Chairman, Te Ururoa Flavell, says Mala’s passing was a
significant loss to her whānau, hapū and iwi, and the
Whānau Ora collective. However, the scholarship will help
other Te Arawa tāngata (people) follow in her
footsteps. ....
