New CJA President Chris Cobb said he was honoured to be leading the association.
He noted that in some of the Commonwealth’s 54 countries these are dark days for journalists – exacerbated by the COVID pandemic, which has added to the physical, emotional and financial ill-treatment being experienced by many reporters and editors.
Cobb and his new team vowed to collaborate with like-minded organizations to add the CJA’s voice to those protesting the systemic abuse of journalists.
“Our priorities over the next few years will also include building the CJA – especially on the African continent,” he said. “And we need to attract more young journalists into the association. Journalist Hassan Shahriar laid to eternal rest
Veteran journalist and former Jatiya Press Club (JPC) president Hassan Shahriar was laid to eternal rest at Rayerbazar Graveyard in the capital on Saturday night.
He was laid to rest after the second namaj-e-janaza after Magreb prayers.
Earlier, his first namaj-e-janaza was held at Jatiya Press Club premises after Asr prayers.
The janaza was attended by his long time colleagues and leaders of different journalists’ organisations. Later, rich tributes were paid to him by placing wreaths on his coffin.
Recalling Hasan Shahriar’s contributions to flourish the mass media, they said his death was an irreparable loss to the country. ....

Hassan Shahriar, a veteran journalist and former president of the National Press Club, has died in hospital care at the age of 76.

He passed away during treatment at Impulse Hospital at 11:30am on Saturday, said Elias Khan, general secretary of the National Press Club.
Shahriar had been battling various health complications, including lung ailment, for a while. After falling seriously ill on Apr 8, he was initially taken to LabAid Hospital before being moved to Anwer Khan Medical College Hospital. Having failed to find an empty ICU bed there, he was later admitted to Impulse Hospital. ....
