The Killeen City Council will meet at 5 p.m.Tuesday to vote on issues discussed at last weekâs workshop session. Among the items is a resolution to fly the Juneteenth Flag at city hall from June 18-20, but only for this year. Juneteenth refers to June 19, a date that many Texas slaves learned of their freedom. President Abraham Lincolnâs Emancipation Proclamation went into effect Jan. 1, 1863, but word did not get to Texas until June 19, 1865. Juneteenth is celebrated annually in Killeen, throughout Texas and other states. The item was originally discussed as an ordinance using official state holidays as a guide, which would allow the flag to be flown every year. Per City Attorney Traci Briggs that list includes all national holidays, as well as Confederate Heroes Day, Texas Independence Day, San Jacinto Day, Junteenth, LBJ Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. ....
At a special session on Tuesday the Killeen City Council is expected to vote on what day to hold a second election for the District 4 council seat race. A mandatory recount on Thursday confirmed Incumbent Steve Harris and candidate Michael Boyd are tied with 181 votes apiece. Third-place finisher Brockley Moore received 112 votes, however, the second election will only be between Harris and Boyd. At the special meeting, which will be held prior to the councilâs normally scheduled workshop, the council will discuss what day to hold the second election, and when to do early voting. The election must be held between June 2 and June 12, according to city documents. ....
Killeen City Council narrowly OKs Danielle Singh as new assistant city manager By a narrow 4-3 vote, the Killeen City Council voted Tuesday to approve Executive Director of Public Works Danielle Singh as the new assistant city manager. Voting in favor of Singhâs appointment were Councilmembers Terry Clark, Steve Harris Debbie Nash-King and Ken Wilkerson. Councilwoman Melissa Brown, Councilman Rick Williams and Councilwoman Shirley Fleming voted against the motion. Singh will be filling the position that has been vacant since David Ellison retired in late October 2020. Brown said it is not the councilâs job to approve someoneâs position because they like them and that there has been a breach of trust against the council, which had not been informed of the hire in advance by City Manager Kent Cagle. ....
