Three people, including a woman, allegedly took their own lives by hanging themselves from a ceiling fan in their respective homes in different parts of Karachi on Thursday.
An official of the Kalakot police station said that 23-year-old Manjola, wife of Rumesh, hung herself from a ceiling fan in her house situated in the Chakiwara neighbourhood. Police said that the woman’s body was taken to the Dr Ruth KM Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for a post-mortem examination, adding that according to her in-laws, the woman had been mentally ill and committed suicide due to a domestic dispute. ....

SUKKUR: Five, including four women, committed suicide in different cities of Sindh on Thursday as a fallout of poverty and domestic violence.
Mumtaz hanged herself to death due to poverty issues in village Walidad near Kuneri in district Mirpurkhas. Another woman, Noor Bano, from Bhirya Road in District Nausharoferoz consumed a poisonous substance, following an episode of domestic violence. Similarly, Shaharbano hanged herself to death in Khanpur, Shikarpur, after being dejected by domestic violence. Chandra Oad was the fourth victim, who took her life in Khipro, district Umarkot. The fifth victim Aajid Gurech consumed poisonous substance following a domestic spat in Mirwah Gorchani in district Mirpurkhas. ....

Urgent action to prevent premature deaths from toxic air

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has welcomed a new report from the British Lung Foundation (BLF) and Asthma UK revealing that 6 million people aged over 65 in England are at high risk of lung damage and asthma attacks because of toxic air.
Across the UK, the report also found that a third of people are breathing levels of PM2.5 over what is recommended by the WHO.
The report found that a quarter of all care homes and a third of all GP practices and hospitals in England are in areas where particulate pollution exceeds the recommended limits set by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The charities demand that the government reduce the legal limit for PM2.5 to 10 micrograms in the UK. This comes as MPs have been calling on the UK Government set tougher targets for air pollution. ....
