NORTH PORT â Locals should decide North Portâs septic-to-sewer future, not politicians, according to Dan Beilman, a lead opponent to such conversion plans. The retired North Port resident and others push hard on that message everywhere they can: in public forums, on social media, a small army collecting voter signatures at City Hall, at pop-up sites around town. NORTH PORT – The North Port City Commission will close Al Goll Hall and the building once occupied by the YMCA in Dallas White Park but on Tuesday stopped short of voting to demolish the two structures, in hopes that a future redeveloper for the site will pay for that. The commission did approve the demolition of the pump house and bath house that date back to when the park served as the site for the city’s public pool. Though she voted along with the other four board members, City Commissioner Debbie McDowell thought it would have made sense to demolish the two structures at the same time as the pool pump and bath houses. She worried that if the city merely boarded up the two buildings, it could create an opportunity for blight. ....
“At least those liens equal a quarter million dollars that we had our taxpayers pay to have something removed that we may or may not get back,” City Commissioner Debbie McDowell noted. “Just because there’s a lien doesn’t mean we get reimbursed; we’re at the bottom of the list.” McDowell, who joined the board in November 2016, is the only commissioner remaining from the members who adopted that 2017 ordinance. Mayor Jill Luke was elected to the board after that, through a special election. Faced with the task of cutting costs in the 2021-22 budget, board members decided that it was time to eliminate the portion of the ordinance empowering the city to trim growth on vacant lots and then bill the property owner. ....
