Shawnee leaders show support for businesses continuing mask use

The Shawnee News-Star City leaders are urging everyone to continue to respect mask requirements still imposed by some businesses in town. On Monday, Shawnee city commissioners approved a resolution to support the efforts of local businesses that are making the choice to continue using face coverings even though the city ended its mask mandate last week. “City Commission of Shawnee wishes to encourage compliance with the mask policies of businesses within Shawnee,” the resolution reads. “City Commission of Shawnee wishes to encourage the citizens of Shawnee to respect the decisions and policies of our local businesses.” Shawnee ends COVID-19 mask mandate

Shawnee s mask mandate to end April 30

The Shawnee News-Star This week Shawnee City Commissioners voted to follow suit with some other communities, choosing to end their mask mandate at the end of the month. The board s face-covering requirement was originally put in place in July and then was extended a couple times with the last end-date set for June 30. With COVID-19 vaccines continuing to roll out, and being offered to most everyone at this point, as well as no spike in cases after Spring Break, some of Oklahoma s larger communities are expected to allow their the mask-wearing edicts to expire April 30. More than half the Commission voiced that when the ordinance was first established, it was the only option for protection at the time.

Shawnee City Commissioners Flood, Matthews: It s time to assess mask mandate

The Shawnee News-Star Though it wasn t on Monday s agenda, the city s mask mandate ordinance was on the minds of a couple Shawnee city commissioners. Toward the end of the meeting, during commissioner comments, Ward 3 City Commissioner Travis Flood and Ward 1 City Commissioner Daniel Matthews both suggested it was time to have a discussion on whether to rescind the local order that for now is in effect through June 30. Flood said he has encountered many questions from residents asking how the city plans to move forward through the rest of the school year and into the summer months. “I know it s not anything we all want to talk about, but I think it might be time for us to start having discussions about that, and what it might look like,” he said.
