Garner/Patch) DECATUR, GA A new historical marker is now standing in Decatur Square to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. and a chapter of his legacy many may not know happened. The marker, which sits at the corner of McDonough Street and West Trinity Place across from the former DeKalb County courthouse, was unveiled this weekend and installed by the Georgia Historical Society just steps away from where the former 30-foot Confederate obelisk stood in the Square for more than 100 years. ....

As the nation celebrates Black History Month, we re taking you back to an often-overlooked chapter in Georgia s civil rights history. Before the Selma to Montgomery march, before the “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was sentenced to four months of hard labor for an outstanding traffic violation. It s October 1960, just weeks before Election Day. Dr. King is arrested for taking part in a lunch counter sit-in at Rich s department store in Atlanta. He was then transferred to DeKalb County, sentenced, jailed and then taken in the dead of night to a Georgia state prison. Thanks to some back-channel, even rogue moves by the Kennedy campaign, Dr. King was released. ....
The series starts at 9 a.m. Sunday with Gospel Yoga, a yoga practice for all ages and levels set to gospel music, led by yogis from The Collective STL. A second Gospel Yoga practice will take place on Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. The Collective STL is a nonprofit yoga and wellness studio in North St. Louis dedicated to âunapologetically affirm(ing) Black lives by intentionally creating a sacred space whereby participants can breathe, move, rest and heal,â according to The Collective STL website. On Sunday, at 3 p.m., the Missouri Historical Society will commemorate the 60 th anniversary of Kingâs visit to the United Hebrew Temple on Skinker Boulevard, which is now the Missouri Historical Society Library and Research Center, in collaboration with the Newmark Institute for Human Relations of the Jewish Community Relations Council. ....

On November 27, 1960, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was speaking at the former United Hebrew Temple on Skinker Boulevard. That temple is now the Missouri Historical Society’s Library and Research Center. ....
