Deputies investigate death of 13-year-old Gainesville girl Danielle Ivanov, The Gainesville Sun Sheriff s deputies Monday were investigating the weekend death of a 13-year-old Gainesville girl killed in a shooting in southwest Gainesville. Maliyah Godwin was shot just before 10 p.m. Friday in Building A of the Majestic Oaks Apartments complex and died after being taken to a local hospital, according to Lt. Kaley Behl of the Alachua County Sheriff s Office. She is the only known victim. No arrests have been made, although the case is being actively investigated, Behl said. Sheriff Clovis Watson Jr. is asking the public for help. ....
Jeremy Hood said the victim, Maliyah Godwin, is the younger sister of an employee at the restaurant. Half of the proceeds of all sales Wednesday will be given to Maliyah s family, which Hood described in an email as devastated. The barbecue restaurant has two locations: 5121 NW 39th Ave. and 521 NE 23rd Ave. The 39th Avenue location is open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., and the 23rd Avenue location is open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Maliyah was shot and killed Friday evening. The Gainesville Police Department for a few years now has concentrated on trying to quell gun violence, but the bullets are still being fired. Now the department has boosted staffing at times on West University Avenue to enforce traffic laws following the recent deaths of two pedestrians. But with all that work to do, the department is still hurting for officers to do it. The department has 27 officer vacancies. The gap has closed from the 42 vacancies in mid-2019 but Chief Tony Jones said more are needed. “We’re still looking for more people, but we are looking for the right people. We will continue our efforts,” Jones said. “I look for a diverse staff because I want a force that is representative of this community. We try to specifically look for a diverse population.” ....
