Greenland thaw threatens sea level 0:53
(CNN) What melted from the Greenland ice sheet on Tuesday is enough to cover the entire state of Florida in 5 centimeters of water, according to data from researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute. In total, more than 8 gigatons of ice melted.
This episode is the third case of widespread and extreme surface melting of ice in Greenland since 2012, according to Tom Slater, a glaciologist at the University of Leeds. Prior to that, no thaw of this magnitude had been recorded in Greenland in the entire age of satellites, which began in the 1970s.
