Adversity in early life linked to higher risk of mental health problems

Thursday, 22 April 2021 - New research has found that childhood adversity, such as parental conflict, death of a close family member or serious injury, before the age of nine was associated with mental health problems in late adolescence.
However, the research also shows that improving the relationship between parents and children could prevent subsequent mental health problems, even in children who have experienced severe adversities. The research also indicated that improving a child s self-esteem and increasing their levels of physical activity can help to reduce the risk of developing mental health problems.

Adolescents who use cannabis frequently may experience a decline in intelligence quotient (IQ) over time, according to an Irish-led study.
The findings of the research provide further insight into the harmful neurological and cognitive effects of frequent cannabis use on young people.
The study, led by researchers at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) University of Medicine and Health Sciences, was published in the January 2021 edition of the journal
Psychological Medicine (

The findings of the research provide further insight into the harmful neurological and cognitive effects of frequent cannabis use on young people.
The paper, led by researchers at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, is published in
Psychological Medicine.
The results revealed that there were declines of approximately 2 IQ points over time in those who use cannabis frequently compared to those who didn t use cannabis. Further analysis suggested that this decline in IQ points was primarily related to reduction in verbal IQ. ....
