Elerson Smith signs rookie contract with Giants
Four of team’s six draft picks have now signed
Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports
Fourth-round pick Elerson Smith on Tuesday became the fourth New York Giants rookie to sign his first NFL contract. Smith joins second-round pick Azeez Ojulari and sixth-round picks Gary Brightwell and Rodarius Williams as draft picks who have signed their deals.
For the Giants, that leaves only first-round pick Kadarius Toney and third-round pick Aaron Robinson unsigned.
An edge rusher out of Northern Iowa, the Giants are hoping that the 6-foot-6, 252-pound 22-year-old develops into an impact edge rusher.
Everything you need to know about Giants’ fourth-round pick Elerson Smith
Once “frail, skinny” kid, could he become Giants’ next pass-rushing star?
That made Farley pay attention.
“First thing I saw was the 6-6 from a distance, of course,” Farley told Big Blue View.
“I started watching the big frame and next I know we broad jump and he hits about a 10-4 broad jump. Anything over 10 foot takes a heck of an athlete . Man, he could jump out of the gym.”
Farley was convinced. Even though he thought the 190-pound Smith looked “really frail, skinny” he wanted to see what he, his coaching staff, and a college weight-training program could do for Smith.
