Galway Bay FM 9 June 2021 print Galway Bay fm newsroom – Many students across Galway now have two leaving cert exams under their belts this evening – as the first day of this year’s examinations drew to a close in the past hour. There are over Leaving Cert 3,200 students across Galway this year – though many will not be sitting some of the exams, while others will sit no exams at all. That’s because they have the option of sitting an exam, taking a calculated grade, or a combination of both, on a subject by subject basis. For example, the first exam this morning was English Paper I – and 30 percent of students nationwide opted for calculated grades only. ....
Education Minister Norma Foley has dropped plans for students to return to classrooms (Niall Carson/PA) In a statement, Minister Foley said: “It is with regret that I announce that, despite the confirmation by Public Health that schools remain safe, that children in special schools and special classes and Leaving Certificate students will not be extended in-person learning. “My Department has engaged with the unions and public health officials with a view to maintaining on site learning for this vulnerable group of students. “It remains my strong belief that this period of time is crucial for the mental wellbeing of all children with special needs. ....
The ASTI teaching union has directed its members not to comply with plans for Leaving Cert students to attend school for three days a week. The union, which represents more than 17,500 teachers, said it was not consulted about the plan and had not received sufficient assurances that “schools are sufficiently safe” for students and teachers. At an emergency meeting on Thursday, the ASTI standing committee decided to direct its members not to co-operate with the arrangements announced by the Minister for Education for in-school teaching.
