After what seemed to be a relatively normal, quiet school board meeting for the Cobre School District on Monday night, board member Gilbert Guadiana ended the meeting on an unexpected note.
“I have another item that I want to bring up, and it’s with a great deal of concern over our activities and the concerns people are bringing up in terms of holding people responsible. I think there’s some dynamics that the board has introduced into administration that are illegal,” Guadiana said. “One is nepotism the hiring of family members when it’s strictly prohibited under New Mexico statutes. ....

Despite misgivings, students, staff back return to classrooms

The Silver Schools Board of Education has already given the green light for its secondary schools to move into the hybrid model.
The district’s elementary schools have been in and out of hybrid instruction where 50 percent of the student population is in the classroom two days a week, alternating with the other half of students in online classes since before the holiday break.
The Cobre School District never went into a hybrid mode in its elementary schools, however.
Last week, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Public Education Department announced that they will allow all districts to enter the hybrid mode in all grades Feb. 8, as long as all of the state’s guidelines are met. ....

The Cobre Consolidated Schools Board of Education discussed school reentry during its first regular meeting of 2021 Monday night, but noted that the district would continue with distance learning to start the spring semester.
“The county remains at a ‘red’ level, and the only county in the state in a ‘yellow’ level is Catron County,” said Joyce Barela, the district’s school improvement officer. “Right now, we’ve Vault tested 22 percent of our staff, and we have a revised reentry plan on social media sites and it has been emailed to students and staff.” ....
