After a lengthy discussion Monday night, the Cobre Schools Board of Education voted to announce a tentative date for moving classes in the district to the hybrid model March 8 and to approve the reopening of athletic practice pods beginning Monday, Feb. 15.
Joyce Barela, the district’s school improvement coordinator, gave the board a rundown on school reentry from the Public Education Department.
Barela said there were three options: remaining remote 100 percent and continuing small groups for special education; continuing in remote, but expanding small group sessions; or a move to hybrid instruction, with kids with last names beginning with A through L going to school Mondays and Tuesdays, and those with last names beginning with M through Z going Wednesdays and Thursdays, with their days ....

The Silver Schools Board of Education has already given the green light for its secondary schools to move into the hybrid model.
The district’s elementary schools have been in and out of hybrid instruction where 50 percent of the student population is in the classroom two days a week, alternating with the other half of students in online classes since before the holiday break.
The Cobre School District never went into a hybrid mode in its elementary schools, however.
Last week, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Public Education Department announced that they will allow all districts to enter the hybrid mode in all grades Feb. 8, as long as all of the state’s guidelines are met. ....

Cobre schools still face uncertainty in new semester

The Cobre Consolidated Schools Board of Education discussed school reentry during its first regular meeting of 2021 Monday night, but noted that the district would continue with distance learning to start the spring semester.
“The county remains at a ‘red’ level, and the only county in the state in a ‘yellow’ level is Catron County,” said Joyce Barela, the district’s school improvement officer. “Right now, we’ve Vault tested 22 percent of our staff, and we have a revised reentry plan on social media sites and it has been emailed to students and staff.” ....
