FARMERS often feel like nothing positive comes out of Westminster, but 2020 kicked off with Chancellor Sajid Javid confirming that nearly £3bn of funding had been allocated to support farmers once the UK leaves the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy. Mr Javid said that this cash would be enough to maintain Direct Payments to farmers at the same rate as last year, and supplement the remaining EU funding that farmers will receive for development projects until 2023 at the latest. The Chancellor also repeated the guarantee that the current annual budget to farmers will be maintained in every year of this Parliament, but stressed that it would be delivered by a new system rewarding ‘public goods’. ....
