strikes caused extensive damage to the civilian infrastructure including multiple residential buildings an a school. russian forces launched at least two missiles in dnipro, some railway infrastructure destroyed. no casualties thankfully were reported there at least yet. fighting ramping up significantly throughout the east with ukraine saying that the town of kriminna fallen after a huge amount of equipment and besieged port city of mariupol, rejected a russian deadline to surrender. they said it will be closed for entry and exit today and any men who remain will be quote unquote, filtered out. let s begin our coverage with cnn matt rivers in lviv on the deadly air strikes we were just talking about. matt, what are you seeing there after all of this? reporter: yeah, kate, lviv has largely been spared some of the horrors we ve seen in other parts of the country throughout this war and yet this morning, there were multiple explosions in the city. four different air strikes.
we want to talk to general hurley to help us break all this down. general, good to see you. thanks for being here. if ukrainians did take out the ship, what is the fallout and what does it do to russian morale? if ukraine did strike this, and truthfully, don, i believe they did. all indicators are that they actually conducted the operation that did that. it s more than just a missile strike, too, there is a lot of things involved in a hit like this. what i would say is it shows the russian navy that ukraine is capable in striking all targets. and, you know, this is a $750 million warship, a crew of over 500 people. it has the admiral of the black sea fleet aboard. it s called a flagship or command control ship. i actually had the opportunity to go on a command control ship in the mediterranean, and they are defense vessels. the communications suite of the one i was on was phenomenal. what does it mean? first of all, it s taken out of command control mode. it s probably kill
afraid. i mean, not be afraid, be ready. but that is not a question to ukraine. and not only for ukraine. for all the world. i think so. more new cnn reporting this hour. the american secretary of state is telling european allies, he believes putin s invasion may last the rest of the year. and there are important battlefield developments today. the crown jewel of russia s navy, the mosqkva now at the bottom of the sea. the big loss may complicate moscow s battle plan as it tries to take the south and the east. overnight, russian retaliation. moscow hitting a military facility on the outskirts of kyiv. russia says it will launch more attacks on targets in and around the capital in the coming hours. in mariupol, time is simply running out. key military commander there says the ukrainian flag is still flying, but russia claims critical advances and appears quite close to capturing that city. along the front lines in donetsk. everything under attack. a ukrainian official says
that is a ukrainian mother realizing her worst fears when she discovers the body of her young son who had been dumped in a shallow well near kyiv. another body also found at the well which was located on the route of the russian retreat near the capital of kyiv. let s begin our coverage now with cnn s matt rivers with me here in lviv. let s talk about this warship. what do we know? we get information from three different sources essentially. russian, ukrainians and americans weighed in. the russians are saying, as you said off the top, they call this a fire on board the ship. it s significant that russian state media stais talking about this. they don t want to be talking about this but realized they don t have a choice. they say there was a fire on board, not doubt. they don t say what the cause of the fire was but say essentially the ship is out of commission, at least for the time being. the cause, from what the ukrainians are saying is the ukrainian armed forces themsel
