now, we haven t heard from any witnesses that saw a shooter or a shooting take place. but if there is a photograph circulating online, law enforcement are clearly still they have got some sort of intelligence that they are working on. and as the chief said, this sort of response is to do a very methodical clear through any building that you have any sort of witness even potentially positive identifications associated with every one of those buildings will be checked room by room, closet by closet, door by door. so you will probably see tactical officers kind of circulating in the background, you will see more folks leaving buildings with their hands up. that is not to treat them harshly, but it is to clearly identify them as bystanders and people who are not involved in the event. just to put some context on it, chapel hill is an incredibly astute university, about 20,000
heating plant, the closets, the classrooms, any place they could still be hiding not knowing what s going on. so they re going room by room, closet by closet. th then they re trying to track the shooter, then you have a separate crime scene of the shooter s residence. is there more information to be gleaned there? and they ll look at, does he have a twitter account, a facebook account, anywhere where he s been e-mailing or texting others, that maybe if not involved, aware of what his intentions were that he might want to do this. they re trying to talk to every friend, relative, neighbor, current or former classmate, to determine if any of them had heard anything of any intention
be that he missed. we don t know that. that s for sure. so this is a very large building. 3,000 people work inside building 197. some people, some employees are still in there, locked in closets, locked in their offices. some people managed to escape. the gunman is still inside. so what does it look like inside that building from a police perspective, tom? oh, it s a very difficult situation because if the person is locked in a closet, the police are going to have to go either now or later are going to have to go room by room, closet by closet, air duct by air duct to see if there s anybody, good guy or bad guy hiding within that building. again, somebody hearing shots could get become afraid and lock themselves in the closet and, you know, the police will have to do a room by room search to clear that building eventually. right now the main issue is do they have the suspect in a particular room or particular part of the building that they can contain even further and try to evac
imagine, there are three people dead on the outside of this temple, as police are arriving we don t know which order they found the victims but they are four people dead inside the temple. these are in police terms, different types of crime scenes. they don t know if they are looking for more than one person until they can go closet by closet and room by loom, hopefully people that are hiding and not injured. they wanted to make sure they know there is not another gunman. what we learned from the news conference they don t have a reason to believe they are looking for a second shooter at this point but they have to treat this as an active scene because of two different victims. some of the witness reports we weren t sure what to believe. we knew from covering these scenes, certainly not as victims ourselves, it s hard sometimes to know if a witness was calm enough to know what they were
