Cllr Will Sutton tells other Fenland councillors a little dickie bird told him MP Steve Barclay had asked his local Conservative association to return a £10,000 lockdown grant

Independent councillor Will Sutton claims that MP Steve Barclay called for his constituency association to return a £10,000 small business rate relief grant they received from the Government.
Mr Barclay, the MP for NE Cambs and Chief Secretary to the Treasury, was said by Cllr Sutton to have “suggested” to the North East Cambridgeshire Conservative Association (NECCA) the cash be returned.
NECCA was one of many successful applicants to Fenland District Council who received £20m during the pandemic last year to support business.

“But I am sure you can appreciate that as a council we have to have proper checks and balances in place.”
She said that “as far as I am aware” 50 Backpacks is not a registered charity nor was it a registered not for profit organisation.
“I haven’t found them registered anywhere,” she said.
Cllr Hoy said she was not aware they were DBS checked, a system whereby employers can check on those involved with vulnerable groups, including children.
She said the council would need to ensure the “proper checks and balances” were in place before dealing with any organisation.
“I really think he needs to search his conscience as it is just 100 yards over the border from Elm (Cllr Sutton’s ward).”

Cllr Hoy told him: “It s not funny, it s shocking and I think you need to explain yourself.”
Cllr Sutton, who had seconded the motion, was invited to speak towards the end of the debate.
