Wandsworth and Richmond CEO set for new post in Jersey

The Jersey Evening Post has reported the 12-month contract comes with a salary of £225,000.
A statement from the Government of Jersey said Mr Martin will be joining the Government on March 1, 2021, following his arrival in Jersey and his receipt of a negative coronavirus test.
Mr Martin joined Wandsworth Council in 2010, and since 2016 has also been Chief Executive of Richmond Council as part of the shared staffing arrangement between the two councils.
Mr Martin originally announced he would be stepping down from Autumn 2020, however this was delayed to lead the emergency response to the pandemic.
Proposals will be made to both full councils that Mark Maidment, the Director of Resources and Deputy Chief Executive, will step-up as interim Chief Executive during the recruitment process. ....

Wandsworth leader criticised for suicide 'joke' in meeting

The leader of Wandsworth Council has been criticised for making a “crass joke about suicide” during a council meeting.
Councillor Ravi Govindia, joked that he was “glad” that Labour cllr Judi Gasser “does not spend time counselling people who are at the other end of a Samaritans call.”
He told last night’s full council meeting: “I don’t think she gives any hope whatsoever to anyone in difficulties. Her style, her manner, her composure is such that you would simply want to end your miseries.”
Cllr Govindia was attacking the Labour opposition for not “acknowledging the good that happens in this council simply because it happens to be a Conservative council,” during a debate on the council’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. ....

Councils opposed to Heathrow’s expansion say today’s Supreme Court ruling changes nothing and called on the airport to abandon its bid for a third runway.
A group of local councils – Wandsworth, Hillingdon, Richmond upon Thames, Hammersmith and Fulham and Windsor and Maidenhead together with the Mayor of London and Greenpeace – had challenged the Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS) alongside environmental groups Plan B and Friends of the Earth.
However, on Wednesday (Dec 16), the Supreme Court agreed with Heathrow Airport Limited that the former Secretary of State acted lawfully when considering the impact of the Paris Agreement.
The ruling confirmed that the airport would be bound to comply with the UK’s revised carbon targets when, and if, it seeks to obtain planning permission for a third runway. ....
