Reopening the precious chalk stream – which has been buried in dark and dank concrete culverts, devoid of all wildlife and nature, under parts of the town centre since the 1960s – has been talked about since around 2017, but no firm plans have been progressed. Despite this, the appeal of the project has not lessened. Years later and the discussions are still ongoing. The Bucks Free Press supports bringing the river back to the surface, as does the High Wycombe Society and Revive The Wye. Debate about whether or not the River Wye, currently buried under concrete in parts of High Wycombe town centre, should be brought back to the surface have been going on for years. But the Bucks Free Press is today launching a poll to get the opinions of readers once and for all. Bringing the important chalk stream back to the surface after it was buried years ago had got the thumbs up from organisations like the High Wycombe Society and Revive the Wye and many readers. However, despite a convincing case worked on by Cllr Hugh McCarthy dating back to 2017, the plans were shelved by the then-Wycombe District Council back in October 2019 because of the costs - although they admitted the plan had widespread support. ....

A deal was struck in March this year, according to council documents. In a March 31 online response, the transport authority said, “the defects are all below intervention level”. To which the resident replied: “Why exactly has one [FixMyStreet] reply said repairs will be carried out within 28 days? “I don’t mean to be rude but @BucksCouncil are embarrassing themselves with conflicting responses.” They added: “This section of road is on a blind bend and vehicles are driving in the middle of the road to avoid it.” A Transport for Bucks spokesman said: “TfB is aware of the defects along Ickford Road, Worminghall. “The length of road is inspected every three months and the defects are all below intervention level. ....
