THE leader of Hampshire County Council is contacting the Secretary of State for Education regarding concerns of parents and teachers about the return to school. Councillor Keith Mans said he is getting in touch with Gavin Williamson to “stress” the concerns of those across the county in relation to Covid-19 measures, ahead of primary school children starting back tomorrow. His comments come as the government has faced mounting pressure over the weekend to keep primary schools closed, with teaching unions telling primary school staff it is “unsafe” to return to work because of rising Covid infections. Earlier today, prime minister Boris Johnson told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show that the risk to children was “very, very low” and the benefit of education was “so huge”. ....
CAMPAIGNERS are urging Hampshire County Council to “kill” Royaldown after discovering that a planning document said the authority is supporting the controversial scheme. The council owns part of the land that could be used to build 5,000 homes, a new road and a large industrial estate between Hursley and Oliver’s Battery near Winchester. In a document uncovered by the Liberal Democrats, the developer for Royaldown states that they “have the consent by the landowners and have indicated that the site is immediately available for development”. They highlight 215 acres of Hampshire County Council land as an integral part of the proposal and if converted from agricultural to commercial use it would generate an estimated £50 million profit for the authority, say the Lib Dems. ....
