Cllr Federica-Smith Roberts clings on in vote against Cllr Simon Coles

Cllr Simon Coles Cllr Smith-Roberts was declared the winner by use of a computer algorithm - the modern equivalent of tossing a coin. Cllr Coles had led the LibDems to power in the SWT local election in May 2019 and was seeking to take back the reins of the party. But, as in a group vote after that election win, the vote was again tied. Cllr Coles, who is also a county councillor, said the LibDem group holds an internal AGM every year just like any other organisation. After the result was declared, he said: I have said I will continue to support Federica of course.

Residents question council s commitment to environment in row over hedge removal

L-R Louise Morris, Penny Ponton, Councillor Andrew Coles and Stuart McCarroll. Picture: Ric Mellis A row has erupted after West Oxfordshire District Council workers spent a week cutting back trees and bushes and removed an entire hedgerow on the Deer Park estate in Witney. Astonished residents said the routine maintenance work should never be carried out in spring when birds are nesting and hedgehogs are emerging. They added that it contradicted the council’s declared intention to address the climate emergency as it appeared it had no plans to replant any lost trees or hedgerows. Louise Morris, from Bourton Close, said: “All I heard last week was chainsaws. The council should be encouraging wildlife not damaging their habitats.”
