TRIBUTES have been paid to former Monmouthshire Council deputy leader and vicar Cllr Bob Greenland, who died last Wednesday (August 9) at the age of 76. ....
When asked about his main priority as leader, Cllr John said: “The number one priority is ensuring children and young people have the best possible start in life. “We only have one shot at our education that’s why we have invested tens of millions in our new school buildings.” Cllr John also hailed the new schools in Caldicot and Monmouth as his biggest council achievement in the last four years as the cabinet member for education. Speaking about his time in the role, Cllr John said: “We have made significant improvements in education standards and we’ve had very positive Estyn reports. ....
Cllr Fox said it felt “a bit final” but, would remain as a councillor for the next 12 months until the council elections in May 2022. Talking about his first memories of his time as a county councillor, Cllr Fox said: “It all started in November 1997, I was elected in a by-election, hadn’t got a clue what I was doing. “I was just a farmer. “I didn’t think then what lay ahead of me or what I might do.” The former leader of the council was elected to the role in 2008 in the May annual general meeting. He described it as “the biggest day” and it was “a huge privilege to be leader”. ....
Council leader, Cllr Peter Fox, said that although the council received an improved Welsh Government settlement with a rise of 3.9 per cent in funding, it is still the lowest funded authority per capita in Wales. “While we may have had a slightly better settlement this year, it has not moved us off the bottom,” he said. “3.9 per cent of very little is still very little.” But Cllr Dimitri Batrouni, the council’s Labour group leader, said the budget was “a wasted opportunity” following an improved Welsh Government settlement. “We will not support the poorest in our communities paying the price,” he said. ....
