Procurement is ongoing for the fire safety works - Credit: Mandy Ryan Residents have called for a “complete overhaul” in how Camden Council listens to their long-running concerns ahead of major works on the Chalcots Estate. The town hall’s planning committee recently approved changes including replacement cladding, windows and radiators. However residents fear these “massively disruptive” works could become a “nightmare”, claiming the new “tilt and turn” windows aren’t wanted by the majority. Construction will start in November and will be completed in 2023, the council says, after it evacuated the estate in 2017 to remove its unsafe cladding following the Grenfell Tower fire. ....
Cllr Porritt said: “I’m sad to see a number of families, many of whom have extensive ties to the community here in Camden, being moved out of the borough. “I sincerely hope Camden Council will offer residents the opportunity to return to the borough they call home and that it will provide support services to ensure they can settle in their new areas, especially for those being moved out of London. “It has been disturbing to hear from families in recent weeks who feel they are being pressured to move out of their homes right before Christmas, to places where they do not want to live, amid a global pandemic. ....

Vulnerable families from England’s Lane Residence – the majority of them women who have suffered domestic violence – have lived in the council-run homeless hostel in Belsize Park since 2004. Some have lived in the temporary accommodation for as long as 10 years, and with their children often schooled in the borough and their family nearby, many regard Camden as their home. ....

Around 10 out of 160 families are left in England’s Lane Residence in Belsize Park, which is run by Camden Council. With its lease set to expire in March, the local authority has rehoused families from the temporary accommodation throughout the year, with some remaining in Camden or other London boroughs.
