Stalking soars across County Durham as incidents hit record levels STALKING incidents in County Durham have increased by more than 100 per cent in the past five years.  New figures show the force recorded 1,747 reports of stalking in the nine months from April to December 2020.  And despite the increase the force used just two Stalking Protection Orders (SPOs) to impose restrictions on suspected stalkers since they were enforced in January 2020.  SPOs are a new civil power available to police designed to make it easier to curb the behaviour of stalkers, with a lower burden of proof required than for a criminal conviction.
