SELLING carbon credits to major businesses could help English agriculture compensate for the loss of EU subsidies which have made the industry lazy , Britain s first carbon farmer has said.
Clive Bailye said farming in a way that kept carbon locked up in soil, and selling that carbon to companies that want to boost their environmental credentials, could help English agriculture become independent.
Mr Bailye, who farms several crops including oilseed rape and peas, recently sold credits worth up to £25,000 from 800 hectares of his arable farm in Staffordshire. ....

Could clover be the 'holy grail' of arable farming?

CLIVE BAILYE drilling clover as a living mulch foundation for a cash crop
GROWING A living mulch under cash crops could eliminate the need for artificial fertilisers, cut costs and boost farm productivity.
At least that is the principle behind ongoing trials of the technique, which utilises the ability of clover to fix nitrogen out of the atmosphere, and enrich the soils in which it grows without the need for applications of manufactured nitrates. Crucially, the use of clover could also greatly reduce the need to plough the soil, and this limit the release of soil carbon.
A team of six farmers is now trialling crop production with a permanent cover of clover underneath – and the key question is whether this plant can cohabit under a crop without significantly affecting its yield. If successful, the technique could become the ‘holy grail’ for environmentally friendly arable farming. ....

Arable farmers will have to produce new “mass balance” figures – essentially stock and movement records – from 1 July, in order to achieve Red Tractor status to supply the growing biofuels market.
The rule changes are being introduced to meet the requirements of the EU’s updated Renewable Energy Directive – RED II – which sets standards and targets for producing and trading in biofuels.
In particular, it aims to increase the use of renewable energy (to 32% of total energy by 2030), while preventing environmentally beneficial land from being diverted into crops for biofuel. ....

NFU urges Red Tractor to end supply chain 'hypocrisy'

Red Tractor needs to do more to demonstrate its value at the farm gate, particularly in the cereals sector, the NFU has warned in its response to the assurance scheme’s consultation on standards.
Launched at the start of the year, the review was intended to gauge industry reaction to Red Tractor’s plans for updating standards in relation to animal welfare, workers’ rights and environmental protection.
But it triggered a wider debate about the cost of the scheme to individual farmers, the bureaucracy involved in meeting the required standards, and the perceived lack of any premium from the market place. ....

Red Tractor - the pros and cons of farm assurance schemes

© Tim Scrivener
Red Tractor – the UK’s largest farm assurance scheme – is currently consulting on the next iteration of its standards as it attempts to keep up with consumer expectations, legislation and scientific advances.
This is the fifth time the scheme has been revamped in its 20-year history, with the focus being on animal welfare, workers’ rights and environmental protection.
Failure to keep up to speed in these areas could undermine consumer trust and lead retailers to develop their own standards, with their own inspections, argues the organisation. They might also be less inclined to buy British.
The consultation runs to 5 March, but the exercise has already triggered some strong reaction about the wider role of Red Tractor. ....
