Jury deliberating case against man who allegedly sold fatal drugs


NEW PHILADELAPHIA A jury has acquitted a 35-year-old city man of charges that he supplied drugs that resulted in a fatal overdose.
The jury found John A. Arnder not guilty of two counts of corrupting another with drugs on Wednesday afternoon. They convicted him of two counts of aggravated drug trafficking.
Prosecution and defense attorneys made their closing arguments Wednesday.
Arnder had been accused of supplying Johnathan D. Brinkman with the synthetic opioids fentanyl and carfentanil on June 20, 2019. Brinkman, 23, of New Philadelphia, died the same day. 
The victim s father found him unconscious in a bedroom at their home in the 300 block of Fourth Street NW, according to New Philadelphia Police Detective Capt. Shawn Nelson, who testified Wednesday. Brinkman was taken to Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover, where he was pronounced dead.  ....

Fleeing suspect rescued from Stillwater Creek ice Tuesday night


DENNISON A wanted 19-year-old Uhrichsville man was rescued from the ice atop Stillwater Creek on Tuesday night after fleeing from police.
Deputies got Glenn D.W. Skinner off the ice so emergency medical workers could treat him, according to Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell.
Looks like the guys did a great job and could very well have saved Mr. Skinner, Campbell said by email.
He credited deputies Chris Edwards, Brian Hale and Dave Digenova with rescuing Skinner, along with K-9 Bruno.
Skinner was unresponsive when they found him, according to Edwards initial report of the incident. Deputies removed him from the ice and dragged him to U.S. Route 250. Uhrichsville Fire Department paramedics took him from the road to a hospital for treatment of severe hypothermia. ....

Southeast Ohio man sideswipes SUV, causes crash with deputy's cruiser

NEWCOMERSTOWN A man from Southeast Ohio who reportedly caused two crashes on U.S. Route 36 Friday evening is facing possible felony charges for failure to comply with a signal of a peace officer, resisting arrest and assault.
He is also to be charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, driving with a suspended license and several other traffic violations.
The second crash damaged a Tuscarawas County Sheriff s Office cruiser. The first damaged a sport-utility vehicle driven by a Uhrichsville woman.
Sgt. Phil Valdez of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff s Office started following the 51-year-old motorist from Vincent, Ohio, after being told about a possible drunk driver at the Tony Mart in Port Washington, according to a report. ....

Dover-New Philadelphia Kiwanis Club marks 100 years


The Dover-New Philadelphia Kiwanis Club will celebrate its 100th year of service to the community in 2021 by launching a project to provide new playground equipment for Deis Hill Park in Dover.
There are four shelters up there that have playground equipment from the 1960s, said the organization s president. Steve Handley. We are going to seek donations from the public and grants for that.
Cost of the project is around $15,000.
Checks can be made to the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation at P.O. Box 103, New Philadelphia, OH 44663. Donations are tax deductible.
In the future, the club plans to fund a similar project in New Philadelphia.  ....

An emergency room doctor at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover says he’s bracing for a long winter as the coronavirus pandemic stretches his facility to the limit. Data from NPR show 81% of the Tuscarawas County hospital s adult inpatient beds are full, and more than half of those are coronavirus patients. Union ER Dr. Kevin Miller says they’re facing an uphill battle.
I feel like we ve been treading water now for the last several weeks, he said.
Miller says he s grateful the hospital has adapted and found room to be able to handle the surge, but he fears the day when perhaps they may no longer be able to. ....
