New cases in the US during the week ending May 8th were down 18.6% from new cases during the week ending May 1st, and are now down 83.3% from the January peak; this week also saw fewer new cases than any week since September. This week s US deaths attributed to Covid were 6.8% lower than the prior week s, and down 80.5% from the January high; US Covid deaths are now at the lowest rate since since the second week of July. ....

Two Democratic senators want to give (almost) the same amount of funding to transit agencies to electrify nation’s bus fleet as President Biden promised to private drivers to electrify their cars. Last week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) introduced the Clean Transit for America Plan, which would provide $73 billion to accelerate electric bus adoption across the country. If it passes in concert with the President’s American Jobs Plan, which provided another $25 billion towards transit electrification, it would mean that EV buses and other vehicles would get close to the President’s $100-billion rebate program aimed at putting EVs into the garages of American residents. ....

According to Common Dreams, the plan is intended to not only combat the climate emergency and improve air quality with zero-emission fleets, but also establish a workforce training program that will create well-paying union jobs. Schumer said he intends to ensure it is included in the American Jobs Plan, part of President Joe Biden’s recently introduced infrastructure proposal. ....
Dive Brief: Senate Democrats on Wednesday unveiled the Clean Transit for America plan, which would provide $73 billion to shift public transit systems away from internal combustion engines through the procurement of electric buses and charging infrastructure. Also on Wednesday, the House Subcommittee on Energy heard testimony on electric vehicle (EV) provisions of The CLEAN Future Act, which aims to eliminate U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. The EV measures in the bill would support the deployment of charging infrastructure and the development of domestic supply chains for EV and battery manufacturing. Republicans at the hearing pushed back , however , on a rapid shift to embrace electric transportation. We are simply not ready to charge EVs at scale, said Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich. ....
