As the N.W.T.’s population grows older, the demand for long-term care and extended care services is also likely to increase. Some residents are already waiting months in hospital for a space to open up.
Dr. Claudia Kraft, the N.W.T.'s medical director, says the resumption of obstetrics services and the intensive care unit being restored to full capacity means the hospital's core services are now back up and running.
It has been one week since the evacuation order for Yellowknife was lifted and residents were allowed back home, but schools and hospitals are still working on the return to normal.
Dr. Claudia Kraft, medical director for the Northwest Territories, says many health services are back up and running after a major fire evacuation, including dialysis and medical oncology. But she says some services, including the obstetrics unit, are not yet back online.
