COVID Leon: Hospitalizations, deaths of Black people 'disproportionally high'

Amidst the backdrop of support for a community vaccine center opening at Florida A&M University, Leon County’s health officer Claudia Blackburn Thursday presented sobering statistics to a local panel whose mission is to make COVID vaccines more accessible to underrepresented populations.
“If we look at the distribution of cases in the Black community of Leon County, at the beginning of the pandemic, 31% of the cases have been in African Americans, but a disproportionate number of the cases have been hospitalized,” Blackburn told members of the Local Coronavirus Vaccination Community Education and Engagement Task Force. “For Leon County residents, 48% have been in Blacks, 36% of the deaths have been in Blacks. ....
