Nearly 30 years ago, three-time champion Kay Kipling discovered how popular host Alex Trebek was among viewers. “Even though I loved ‘Jeopardy!’ as a show, I hadn’t realized how much of a fan base he had,” said Kipling, executive editor of Sarasota Magazine. “Everyone in the audience was crazy about him. They were in awe of him. It was like a rock star moment for them. This was Alex Trebek.” And that was just seven years into what would become a 36-year run as host of the show. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, “Jeopardy!” is scheduled to air the final episode that Trebek taped just two weeks before he died in November after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
