The National Trust has called for the government to scrap a planned expansion of permitted development rights, warning that it risks causing ‘long-term damage to the economy, communities and the built environment’
Changes to planning rules mean shops, restaurants, health facilities, nurseries, offices and light industrial buildings are now all counted as Use Class E, and planning permission is no longer required to change between these building uses.

And from August developers will be able to change the use of any empty Class E building into housing without consent (
