essentially and it turns out as a lifelong republican has reported to be, he thought he could get in there with president obama and moderate some of his views that are left leaning and also, he felt as though it s good for g.e. for him to be that close to the white house and who can argue with that philosophy but he s dismaid how president obama has moved far left after three years, not to the middle and he hates the class warfare talk. yeah, indeed. and in fact, his letter to the shareholders said we live in a tough era in which the public discourse in general is negative. american companies particularly big companies are vilified when we need to work together to find a better way. of course, he is a life long republican, you know, but this made a lot of sense for g.e. if nothing else because obviously it s a company that s focused on green energy, energy in general. you want to get in and lobby the president. don t want to make him angry now. they re writing a big check for t
let s go out front. i m erin burnett. breaking news, federal failure. gridlock reigns in washington once again. the payroll tax cut proposal passes the republican house. so why do we say failure? well, the republican bill included a controversial oil pipeline that the president has said he would veto. so pass, smash. we re at square one with congress playing chicken with the clock. there are just 18 days left until the tax cut expires. if it does, the average american will pay about a thousand dollars more in taxes next year. now, this may not be economic armageddon. but because the tax cut is popular for everyone, both parties want to pass it. so why are they failing? the bottom line, in one afternoon we found a way to compromise and get this done with the help of robert and williams at the nonpartisan tax policy center. here goes, what we call a decent proposal. if you extended the payroll tax cut for only people making under $75,000 a year, the price tag would be about $

these are significant challenges that doesn t just require a good president, it requires a meaningful debate in congress as well. and a final question, sir. what s your take on all this class warfare talk coming from republicans, this rhetoric that s been emanating from many. mitch mcconnell, paul ryan, john boehner, class warfare. well, i think there s a concern in this country that there s a great divide amongst the rich and those who are less fortunate. i m not sure that that s a good approach to take in how we want to unite our country and bring our country forward economically. i d like to focus on results, on action. i m on the budget committee. we re looking at tax reform overhaul. not just hitting around the evenings to try to change things. i think we need a whole new tax structure in this country, and i believe that there are republicans and democrats who can work together to make that happen.
