(WFIE) - A 14 News follow up on Navy Fireman 2nd Class Martin Young. He died in 1941 when his battleship was attacked during Pearl Harbor. His remains, found after being missing for 80 years, were finally laid to rest in Lewisport on Saturday. Over 600 flags lined the streets for miles through Lewisport, all to honor the fallen Navy soldier, who was originally from Hawesville. “It’s a way of bringing the community together,” Jeffrey Hastings said. “It’s not about us, it’s about bringing the community together and giving them the tools and equipment to pay their honor and pay their respect.” ....

Young was laid to rest, after almost 80 years away from home. Young, a sailor with the battleship USS Oklahoma, was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Except for the few surviving members of The Greatest Generation, the story of Pearl Harbor and World War II is known mostly through history books or films now. But the town of Lewisport remembers, and people came out in number Saturday to see Young taken to his resting place in the town s cemetery. ....
Flags Lowered to Half-Staff for Sailor Martin Young of Hawesville zaew28 Gov. Andy Beshear has ordered flags lowered to half-staff at all state buildings and encourages the same for all individuals, businesses, organizations, and government agencies. From sunrise to sunset on Saturday, May 15th, 2021 flags will be lowered in honor of Fireman Young on the day of his interment.
