There is lincoln on one end, he was his private secretary, lived in the white house for every war years. So much of what we know about techoln come from hays with him. He served on the mckinley as well and was secretary of state for teddy roosevelt, so you have these iconic bookends in american history, and then when you look deeper, you realize all the chapters in between, from the civil war to the beginning of the 20thcentury, he is a presence in every one of those chapters.
