Succession a key concern of local family businesses

Taiwanese family businesses assign great importance to succession and most have adopted informal mechanisms, accounting firm Ernst & Young Taiwan said on Thursday, as it released its first such survey at a news conference in Taipei.
A solid and healthy succession scheme tops the list of concerns among 33 percent of family businesses in Taiwan, while 75 percent believe that governance via informal mechanisms, such as family gatherings, render a positive influence, it said.
Others approach the issue the formal corporate way, namely through board and shareholder meetings that have a legally binding effect, it said.

The number of people employed in the industrial and service sectors increased a fractional 0.05 percent in December, while monthly take-home pay expanded 2.65 percent to NT$44,000 (US$1,579), the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said yesterday.
That represents a sixth straight month of gains and implies a full recovery from the negative impact of the level 3 COVID-19 alert introduced in May last year, DGBAS Census Department Deputy Director Chen Hui-hsin (陳惠欣) said.
However, real regular wages last year contracted 0.04 percent, the first retreat in five years, as faster inflation wiped out gains, Chen said.

Tax revenue hits record high despite setbacks

The central government last month received NT$203.2 billion (US$7.29 billion) in tax revenue, an 8.4 percent rise from a year earlier to a historical high, as a healthy economy boosted personal and corporate incomes, the Ministry of Finance said yesterday.
The high draw came despite securities transaction tax revenue registering a 17.8 percent retreat year-on-year, ending 27 straight months of gains, as the specter of interest rate hikes and geopolitical tensions abroad drove investors to cut equity positions, factors that persist this month, the ministry said.
